- KICKAPOO STATE PARK -
Nature Education Center

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
SPRING 2007

Program:

The solution presented here was the result of a project for the University of Illinois School of Architecture Arch 472 Spring Studio.  The goal of this studio was to develop an interactive space for the Kickapoo State Park to serve as a center for the preservation and education of nature.

Site:

The project is located within Kickapoo State Park that is centrally located between the Urbana-Champaign Campus and the Indiana State border.  The site for this project is located at the heart of the park on the shore of one of the park's many lakes.

Concept:

The solution that I developed was a facility that fosters growth through education and recreation in an exciting learning environment within a natural setting that instills environmental responsibility and sound ecological principles.  This solution was inspired by the goal to connect the experience of the user with that of education and enjoyment through nature.  Exploiting this connection allows the user to better enjoy the park while preserving it for others and develop a greater appreciation for the environment on the whole.  The key to this experience is the connections the user establishes through observation, reflection, and interaction with the environment that is fostered through various activities, displays and engagement with nature through the Nature Education Center.

CONNECTIONS:
  • Connecting Experience with Education and Recreation
  • Observation
  • Reflection
  • Interaction
  • Create a facility that fosters growth through education and recreation in an exciting learning environment within a natural setting that instills environmental responsibility and sound ecological principles
