First Semester Studio Projects
FLUIDITY
Block House Studio Project
Champaign, Illinois
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
FALL 2006
The first year studio “Block House” project was a developed as an exercise to familiarize studio participants in designing and working within a 3D software environment. This project was the transition from the traditional design studio component and an introduction into computer aided design. For this effort the program consisted of a typical single-family residential home where final design was required to be executed within Google Sketchup.
The design that was developed provides an open concept that breaks down traditional room demarcations to allow uninhibited movement and views through the residence. The scheme maximizes natural light entering into the interior and exterior views, while allowing for occupants privacy from the streetscape.

FOCUS
8-Space Studio Project
Champaign, Illinois
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
FALL 2006
The “8-Space” studio project was initiated in the first year architectural studio. The objective of this project was to familiarize the studio with spatial arrangement and hierarchy within design. The objective was achieved through design development of eight programmed spaces and the focal space, the “red room,” on a unique and challenging riverside site.
My project was developed with the goal of designing the programmed spaces in a fluid manner, easily comprehensible on the exterior through the building’s structural arrangement. The design maximizes views to the river and provides a coherent interior spatial arrangement. The interior was arranged in a hierarchy that runs from public and more open spaces on the lower floors, with progressively secluded rooms as one ascends to the top floor, where the master bedroom is located. The “red room” is located in a prime, central location in order to provide superior exterior views. The design maximizes the unique site by creating a dramatic river façade with imposing vertical piers and a sweeping roof. The street façade arrangement provides privacy yet allows unique views from the exterior.
